Are you thinking about becoming more serious about dance in the New Year?
Statistics show that dancing is now rapidly becoming a national pastime. It’s not a surprise: offering a range of health benefits as well as providing opportunities for people to connect, dancing is something that has been with us for millennia, and will be around for years to come.
If you’re wondering where to start – or how to improve – don’t panic. Unlike many sports, not much is needed in order to grace the immortal boards. However, there are some bits and pieces that you will find useful, especially if you are thinking about getting serious. We’ve put our heads together, and have come up with this quick list.
1) Download An App
There’s an app for everything these days, and – thankfully – dancing is no different. Take a look at this list for some ideas. These apps let you do everything from control the speed of the music to making careful calculations on your posture.
2) Look After Yourself
Elegant, graceful, and glamorous, dancing is nevertheless a dedicated sport. Make sure that you compliment your activity with a calming wind-down. Stock up on your favourite bubble bath and reach for your comfiest slippers – the age-old comforting antidote to aching feet.
3) Look After Your Feet
Dancing doesn’t need to damage the feet. However, if you are trying to twirl in sub-standard footwear, it can. Feet need to be cared for, because issues with gait, balance, and tension can affect the whole body, especially the spine. Our secret is sapphire ash, which is an ideal shoe for offering a combination of comfort and athletic-grade quality.
4) Find A Teacher That You Trust
Don’t settle for the first teacher who pops up on Google. Feel free to try several different tutors until you find one who harmonises with you. It’s also standard practice for dancers to change teachers every five or six years. This allows you to gain different insights, as you gradually develop your own style. Good teachers will encourage you to try lots of different classes so that you can develop a wide range of skills.
5) Commit To A Schedule
Whether it’s entering yourself for a competition or booking tickets to an event, having a clear idea about the year ahead can help you to stay on track. Set small but reasonable goals that will keep you in touch with the dancing community.
6) Ask Questions
Whether it’s a query about heel height, shoe style, or sequins, just ask! People who have dedicated their lives to the passion of ballroom and Latin dancing are always keen to share their knowledge. Moving your dancing forwards might not be as intimidating as you think. You can ask us anything, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
